The origin of this breed is subject to various theories. The Asian Molosser could have been the breed’s ancestor. The dogs excelled in a variety of duties, such as herding, guarding and drafting. They were well established by 1050 A.D., when Archdeacon Bernard de Menthon founded the Hospice in the Swiss Alps. A saint bernard puppy will grow to be a large dog.
