This perky, cheerful, seemingly tireless dog is constantly alert, always in motion, and is highly trainable. Loyal and gentle with their owners and with children, they are reserved with strangers and will raise the alarm with their piercing bark at the slightest provocation. The Schipperke, which looks rather like spitz dogs and Belgian sheepdogs, is thought by some to be descended from the Leauvenaar.
