These hounds stand between 17.5 and 22 inches tall and weighs between 40 and 60 pounds. They are very strong and powerful, yet agile as well. The coat of these hounds should be short, straight with thick and soft undercoat.

The breed is also known under the name of Kochi-ken. The word "ken" is the word that describes dogs in Japanese and "Kochi" being the name of the region in Japan in which they were first bred. There are three varieties of the breed: the Awa, Hongawa, and Hata. When buying a shikoku dog from a kennel, ask to see the pictures of the foundation stock.
