These medium-sized dogs are 20-21 inches at the shoulders; their coat is short to medium-length, with dense undercoat, which allows the dogs to withstand a wide range of temperatures. This breed has many characteristics typical of the Spitz.

This Japan dog breed is very rare in the world. Even in Japan there are only about 300 of them left. In the USA there live only 4 or 5 of them; they are not registered by major associations for purebred and cannot take part in shows and competitions. Shikoku dogs need training as puppies.
