These dogs were very popular among the nobility of Great Britain. The AKC registered this breed in 1887; today, these dogs are used mostly as family pets, but are still able to kill rats and mice. These dogs are very loyal to children and form close bond with the whole family.

This breed appeared in the 17th century when a Spanish ship was wrecked near the Scottish Hebrides. Maltese dogs that were on board mated with local dogs and produced quite new bred with pleasing looks and affectionate temperament.
