These dogs are medium-sized (up to 20 inches at the shoulders) and square in proportion. The head is rectangular and long, with a short muzzle. The ears are fold forward; the eyes are almond-shaped and brown. These dogs are strong and graceful.

These dogs have been used since the ancient times by Irish farmers to herd sheep and control vermin. The public presentation of the breed was in 1933; the AKC recognized it in 1973. These dogs are very rare outside Ireland. The soft coated wheaten terrier kennels will have pictures avaiable.
