So far, there is little certainty as to the exact origin of the breed, but their appearance suggests genetic kinship to German Spitz, Samoyeds and Keeshonds that arrived in the USA with German settlers around the turn of the 20th century.

American Standard Eskimo Dogs have a thick and dense white coat, which is particularly profuse around the neck. The ears are erectile and triangular; the head is wedge-shaped, the muzzle tapering toward the nose. The tail is heavily coated and turned over the back; double curl is a serious fault.
