This Finnish Lapphund is meant for managing herds of reindeer. He has a profuse coat with a substantial ‘collar’ around the neck. Black is the dominant color, and there are markings on the head, neck, chest, legs, and on the tip of the tail.

This breed descended from the Lapland Dog that can be traced back to 7000 BC. The first breed standard was accepted in 1945, then it was changed in 1996, and in 1993 the breed received its current name. The breed is common in Finland and is not found elsewhere. Dog breeders may have the title of breeder and also rescue worker.
