The true origin of the breed is unknown. This breed may be a result of albinism in German pointing dogs, a cross of the German hound and Braken, or a cross of a regular pointer and yellow pointer. These dogs are of moderate size and very slender and sleek.

Dogs of this breed are moderately large and sleek. Their coat is short, fine and smooth; all shades of gray color are accepted. The eyes are gray, blue-gray or amber. The ears are long and pendant. The tail is usually docked. Prior to buying a weimaraner pup, consider adopting dogs from rescues.
