The tail, 12-15cm long, should be as straight as possible with hard hair. Westies carry the tail proudly, but not gaily curving over the back. The coloring of the dogs is white and the coat is about 5cm long, with short, dense undercoat.

These are compact dogs with round, slightly domed head, heavy eyebrows and strong jaws. The ears are V-shaped, small, carried erect. The dark (almost black) eyes are wide set, not round. The body is muscular, with powerful feet, the chest is let down, the ribs are well sprung.
