Despite the name of the breed, these dogs originated in Newfoundland. The ancestors of these dogs were used by fishermen to help them do draft work. As a matter of fact, there were two varieties of the dogs used by fishermen. In the 1700s, Newfoundland fishermen made use of the Greater and Lesser St. John’s dogs.
